Tips & Tricks: Managing Contacts on Your Phone

Updated February 23, 2015

The Contacts app lets you store and manage contacts from a variety of sources, including contacts you enter and save directly on your device, as well as contacts synchronized with your Google account, compatible email programs (including Microsoft Exchange Server), and your Facebook friends. Keep your contacts organized with these helpful tips.

Accessing Contacts

To access your list of contacts, simply tap Apps > Contacts from a Home screen.

Finding a Contact

You can search for a contact, or scroll the list to find one by name. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts. Tap the Search field, and then enter characters to find contacts that match, or tap a letter on the side of the list to go directly to that letter in the alphabetical list.

Adding a Contact

Use the following steps to add a new contact:

  1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.
  2. Tap Create contact, and then tap contact fields to enter information.
    • Choose a storage account for the contact. You can choose Device to store the contact on the device, or select an account.
    • Tap Photo to assign a picture to the new contact.
    • Enter a name, phone number, email address, and assign the contact to a group. Tap the following icons for more options:
      • Tap Add new to add more entries.
      • Tap Delete to remove an entry.
      • Tap Add another field to add more fields.
      • Tap Label to choose a label for the field.
  3. Tap Save.

Edit a Contact

When editing a contact, you can tap a field and change or delete the information, or you can add additional fields to the contact’s list of information.

From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts. Tap the contact to display it, and then tap Edit. Tap any of the fields to add, change or delete information. Tap Save.

Share a Name Card

When you share a name card, the contact’s information is sent as a vCard file (.vcf). You can share a vCard via Bluetooth® or Wi-Fi Direct, attach it to a message, or save it to a storage location.

From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts. Tap a contact to display it, and then tap More options > Share name card. Choose a sharing method and follow the prompts.

Delete Contacts

You can delete a single contact, or choose multiple contacts to delete. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts. Touch and hold on a contact to select it. You can also tap other contacts, or choose Select all to select all contacts. Tap Delete.
