Hearing a new song only to miss the name or band behind the tune is frustrating. Smartphones make it easy to discover the name of a song, the band that plays it and where you can hear or purchase the music.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Gone are the days of waiting for a song to come back on the radio in hopes of hearing the artist's name or the song title so you can download it. The next time you hear a song you like, whether it is on the radio, in a retail store or at a club, use your smartphone to find out everything you want to know about the song.
Groove with Google Now
Google Now, which is available on many smartphones, is a powerful tool. You're given information you need, when you need it, without asking. A lesser-known trick up Google Now's sleeve is the ability to identify music. To use Google Now to identify a song, launch the app and then say "Google" to activate the voice commands. Ask "What song is this?" and Google Now analyzes the song and provides you with results.
Shake It with Shazam
Shazam is a great song-identifying app. With this free app, users press a button and a few seconds later learn everything they ever wanted to know about a mystery song. Results include where to listen to the song online, where to purchase it and—most importantly—the lyrics. Don't worry about having to remember the results. Shazam keeps a running history of music that it identifies for you.
Either of these options provides you with a quick and easy way to identify music. Google Now offers fast voice commands, whereas Shazam takes a few taps to get up and running but provides more information about the music. Using both services in tandem provides the best results. For those times when you're in a rush, Google Now's voice commands work well enough to give you a title you can research down the road—just grab a screenshot and search for more information later.
