How to Amplify a Microphone on the Computer for Karaoke

The microphone sensitivity level should be your first step to improving your microphone's performance, but if that's already maxed out, you have another option. Like previous versions of Windows, Windows 8 offers a Microphone Boost feature that amplifies the microphone to better pick up your singing voice. You'll also need to configure Windows to transmit your voice through the computer speakers by making Windows "listen" to the microphone.

Step 1

Right-click the "Speakers" icon in the Desktop mode's Notification area and select "Recording Devices." Alternatively, type "Manage Audio Devices" while viewing the Start screen, click "Settings," select "Manage Audio Devices" and click the "Recording" tab.

Step 2

Right-click the karaoke microphone and select "Properties." If the microphone you want to use is unlisted, right-click anywhere in the window and select "Show Disabled Devices." Right-click the microphone and select "Enable."

Step 3

Click the "Levels" tab and move the "Microphone" slider to the right to increase sensitivity.

Step 4

Drag the "Microphone Boost" slider to the right to amplify the microphone.

Step 5

Click the "Advanced" tab and check "Allow Applications to Take Exclusive Control of This Device" to allow the karaoke software full access to the microphone and the Microphone Boost feature.

Step 6

Click the "Listen" tab and check "Listen to This Device" to enable your voice to flow through the microphone to your speakers. Be careful not to position the singer too close to the speakers, or you will experience a feedback loop; a noise-canceling microphone designed for karaoke helps minimize this effect.

Step 7

Click "OK" in both windows to accept your changes.
